I haven't forgotten the supposed end of the Maya calendar. My favorite free new-age magazine in Pittsburgh has been giving it quite a buildup. That, too, will still be a hot topic in 2033, when new-agers will confidently explain to their proselytes that the world ended in 2012, but most people weren't enlightened enough to notice. If you don't believe me, remember the "harmonic convergence" of 1987, which ushered in a new age of universal peace and brotherhood. See, for example, http://tinyurl.com/2lkk7n.

2033? You forget that the world (as we know it) will end on 21.Dec.2012 when the Mayan calendar runs out and the oil-slick aliens return to enslave us all and reclaim the planet as their own (cf. The X-Files). Of course, that conflicts with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy's claim that the world will end on a Thursday--whereas the above date is a Friday--but I'm sure there's a way to reconcile the two. ;-)
